Reading Informational Text - Engaging the Whole Class

I’m always looking for ways to keep
all my students engaged and actually
paying attention to their reading.
Here is what we did this week
with an informational text article.
Each student had to read an article.
As they read, they had to record
some ideas on their note cards.
FYI – I cut index cards in half and each student
received three of them.
You could even use a sheet of paper.
On one side of the card,
they recorded an important
word, phrase or sentence.
On the other side,
they recorded why it was important.

Then came the fun part!
I put the kids into groups of three or four.
Student #1 shared the word, phrase or sentence on their card.
Student #2 told why they thought the idea was important.
Student #3 had to give a different idea.
Finally, Student #1 told why they chose the idea
as an important part of the article.
Then it was time for Student #2 to read his first idea.
Student #3 gave their thoughts as to why
the idea was chosen.
Student #1 gave their feedback
and then Student #2 gave their reason.

This continued until all the students
had a chance to share their cards.
As the students discussed,
I rotated around the room and listened.

For some of the students,
I questioned why they chose certain words.
Many kids had the same words and so we
discussed why that happened.
I had two boys that truly understood
the main idea of the article.
They both found a sentence that
summarized the whole article.

It was awesome to hear everyone talking  about reading!

Have you ever used this type of activity?
What other activities have you used with informational text?

Throwback Thursday Linky - Common Core Reading Foldables

Today was the first day it actually felt like summer.
It was hot, sunny and we even set up our little pool.
My older daughter loved playing in the water
with her little cousin.
The one year old has a cold and was not interested.
Maybe next time.

Anyway, I'm linking up today with The First Grade Parade.

I've only been blogging since February,
but I love looking back at my previous posts.
It gives me a chance to self reflect and
brainstorm ways to improve my teaching.
But I also like to reflect on my blogging style.

Here is one of my favorite posts.
I love the picture of my daughter, the cupcakes
and it has one of my favorite products featured.
I really wanted to change some parts of the post,
but I decided to keep it the same
since that is the point of this linky.
Original Post Date - 3/22/13

This week I was busy, but I didn't mind because.....
It's Spring Break!

Tonight I am linking up with Amanda from Teaching Maddeness for

And the last part of my post is for this Wednesday Workshop.

1.  The one thing that took most of my time was my little girl.  She's only 11 months old and she has a terrible cold.  It's so hard with little ones because they can't tell you what is wrong.  I'm so glad it is spring break so she can rest and get better.  I stayed home with her on Monday and Thursday.  I love surprise days at home with my girls.

Here she is on a better day.

2.  Emergency Sub Plans - I was so glad that this was the first year I put together emergency sub plans.  It was an entire days worth of work for the sub and I didn't even have to go into school.  Of course, now I have to change them, but I don't mind.

3.  Last Saturday we had the family birthday party for my now four year old daughter.  Her gift was a night with just mom and dad at a hotel with a pool.  It was a busy but fun weekend.  These are some of the awesome cupcakes that my husband made for her.

4.  I finally finished making my informational text and literature foldables.  I loved using them this week with my students for reading.  We added them to our reading journals.  It gives the kids a great way to organize their thinking and they are all aligned to the common core.

I'm really looking forward to this week with my girls.  We don't really have any plans and I am fine with that.

Who else just started spring break?  Do you have any plans?

Five For Friday...Again

It's Friday!  That means it's time for...

1.  We had a Snow Day on Tuesday!  It was nice to have a surprise day at home with my two girls and my two dogs.  Check out Chip enjoying the snow.

2.  My soon to be four year old daughter drew this picture of me.  Those of you who know me would know right away it is me!  So cute.

3 and 4.  You know the lesson that seems so perfect you wished the principal made a surprise visit at that very moment?  That happened to me twice this week.

First, we were finishing up some reading in our social studies textbook...boring.  I found an activity from Rachel Lynette called Fact Swap and it's a freebie on her site.

In a nutshell, each student writes three facts.  Then they walk around getting six new facts from other students.  My kids were so engaged and wanted to share their new facts with me.  It actually made reading the textbook fun!

The other activity was a lesson about great beginnings for a piece of writing. Each student was given a sheet with four beginning sentences all related to alligators.  They had to rank them 1-4, with 1 being the most interesting beginning.  Then they got together with a partner and together had to agree on the rankings.

Next I put the two kids together with another two kids...groups of four.  They had to do the same thing.  There were some heated debates going on in some of the groups.

In the end, we came together as a class and discussed their rankings.  We never came to a whole class consensus, but it was close.  Some of the kids were already talking about how they were going to change the openings to their research reports they're working on.  Pat on the back for me!

5.  I finally put together some foldables I have been wanting to make.  The kids in my class LOVE to fold paper.  We have gone through so many Post-Its this year.  So naturally, they loved it when I introduced them to the informational text foldables.  We used them this week and I felt the responses I read were more meaningful than when I just give them a worksheet.  We'll see if it lasts.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and don't forget to "spring" forward on Saturday night.
